AN Asaba-based couple have been arrested for allegedly selling their new born twins for N200,000 each.
The incident, according to the Delta State Police Command’s spokesman, Mr. Lucky Uyabeme, took place last Sunday, while the buyer of the twins based in Lagos and a Social Welfare Officer who allegedly brokered the transaction have equally been arrested.
According to Uyabeme, “on Sunday, at about 3.10 p.m, the Chairman of Asaba Community Policing, Mr. Anthony Okonkevo, arrested a couple, Augustine Agbona and his wife, Ebere, living at the back of NTA Asaba, for child stealing and handed them over to the Divisional Police Officer ‘A’ Division police station, Asaba.
“However, police investigation revealed that the said Ebere Agbona, delivered a set of twin babies a boy and a girl a few days earlier, at Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Asaba and sold them to one Anwulie Okogwu, who resides in Lagos at the rate of N200,000 each through one Ebele Ofuani of Ogwashi-Uku.
“Meanwhile, the said Ebere Ofuani has been arrested and the babies recovered and handed over to the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare Asaba for proper care.
Also, one Oniyeogali Okolie of Social Welfare Issele-Uku said to be the mastermind of the business has been arrested. Investigation into the case is said to be on-going.”
